Dog Fighting in Green Bay

Well actually in Allouez. Which is the village where I live.

I know I have ranted about this in the past, but there was a woman on the news tonight discussing the case. She said something like: 'It is a horrible thing to do to those dogs and it's a sin'. Do not quote me on this because, I am not sure exactly what she said, but I know the word sin was lodged in there.

Any one know where I am going with this? Any one? Bueller?

I know I did it for years and years and years. I compartmentalized animals. There were animals I ate and animals that were companions (although, I called them pets back then). I don't know when it became so clear to me, but now I am almost unable to understand how a person can eat one animal and love another.

I honestly have no idea where this post is going. On one hand, I think it is great that people are starting to see that animal abuse is real. I am impressed that the stories are starting to get some coverage locally. Micheal Vick isn't an aberration. Dog fighting is real and is probably happening some where in your community.

On the other hand, well, see above. Compartmentalizing, eat one-love the other. I think you get it.

Maybe I am looking for progress too fast. Maybe it has to start some where and dog fighting is where it will start for some. I ask that when you look into the eyes of your dog, cat, bird, ferret, or what ever companion you have, imagine them all alone in a veal crate with no room to move. Imagine them in line watching others like them being slaughtered. Imagine them being bred over and over again and just used as commodity.

The One-Upper

Does any one else know a one upper? If you do this post is for you.

The one upper not only has a better story than you, it is often longer and what I have realized is it is often LIES.

A gentleman spent about 20 minutes in a training class today explaining the large sums of money he spent on booze while in Puerto Rico. ($150 bottles of champagne, blah fucking blah) He put it in his suit case and was convinced it was stolen from his suit case while going through customs.

Customs? In Puerto Rico you say?

My understanding is that the Common Wealth of Peurto Rico has been "under US rule" (which sucks in more ways than one) since the late forties. In other words, when you travel to Puerto Rico, you are still traveling domestically, as far as the airlines are concerned. Which means no cusmtoms. Which translates to: "Hey fucker, you are full of shit".

That was a great use of comma's and time for me to sign off!

Vegan Wedding

I have been a very bad blogger as of late. I am going to try and post more often, I swear.

I do have to say that I am totally excited for the wedding I get to attend tomorrow. Typically, I don't like going to weddings. It's a pain for me to find something to eat, people look at me funny, and I get very tired of explaining things to my table-mates and waitresses and others.

I am going to my good friend B and A's wedding in Madison tomorrow. Why, you may ask, is this such a momentous occasion? The groom is vegan and the bride is vegetarian. I have a vegan meal (Ethiopian stew), vegan appetizers, vegan wedding cake (HELLO!), and vegan pizza for later in the night! I am going to eat soooo well at this wedding. I can honestly say this is the first (and probably only) wedding I have gone to where I will get to eat some of the cake. Words cannot express the joy this gives me.

I am also hoping that I can talk some of my Madison buddies into going to the Blue Plate Diner on Sunday morning. They have tofu scramble and soy milk shakes. Need I say more?

Vegan diet reverses diabetes symptoms, study finds
Reuters
WASHINGTON
People who ate a low-fat vegan diet, cutting out all meat and dairy, lowered their blood sugar more and lost more weight than people on a standard American Diabetes Association diet, researchers said on Thursday.

They lowered their cholesterol more and ended up with better kidney function, according to the report published in Diabetes Care, a journal published by the American Diabetes Association.

Participants said the vegan diet was easier to follow than most because they did not measure portions or count calories. Three of the vegan dieters dropped out of the study, compared to eight on the standard diet.

"I hope this study will rekindle interest in using diet changes first, rather than prescription drugs," Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine, which helped conduct the study, told a news conference.
An estimated 18 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, which results from a combination of genetics and poor eating and exercise habits. They run a high risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and limb loss.

Barnard's team and colleagues at George Washington University, the University of Toronto and the University of North Carolina tested 99 people with type 2 diabetes, assigning them randomly to either a low-fat, low-sugar vegan diet or the standard American Diabetes Association diet.

After 22 weeks on the diet, 43 percent of those on the vegan diet and 26 percent of those on the standard diet were either able to stop taking some of their drugs such as insulin or glucose-control medications, or lowered the doses.
The vegan dieters lost 14 pounds (6.5 kg) on average while the diabetes association dieters lost 6.8 pounds (3.1 kg).

An important level of glucose control called a1c fell by 1.23 points in the vegan group and by 0.38 in the group on the standard diet.

DROPPING DRUGS
A1c gives a measure of how well controlled blood sugar has been over the preceding three months.

In the dieters who did not change whatever cholesterol drugs they were on during the study, LDL or "bad" cholesterol fell by 21 percent in the vegan group and 10 percent in the standard diet group.

The vegan diet removed all animal products, including meat, fish and dairy. It was also low in added fat and in sugar.

The American Diabetes Association diet is more tailored, taking into account the patient's weight and cholesterol. Most patients on this diet cut calories significantly, and were told to eat sugary and starchy foods in moderation.

All 99 participants met weekly with advisers, who advised them on recipes, gave them tips for sticking to their respective diets, and offered encouragement.
"We have got a combination here that works successfully," said Dr. David Jenkins of the University of Toronto, who worked on the study. "The message that we so often get with diet is that it is no good because nobody follows it for very long."

Dr. Joshua Cohen, George Washington University associate professor of medicine, said everyone diagnosed with diabetes is told to start eating more carefully.
"That may be among the hardest things that any of us can do," Cohen told the news conference.

The vegan diet "is at least as good, if not better than traditional approaches," Cohen said.

Vance Warren, a 36-year-old retired police officer living in Washington, said he lowered his a1c from 10.4, considered uncontrolled diabetes, to 5.1, considered a healthy level, over 18 months. "My life is much better being 74 pounds (34 kg) lighter," Warren told the news conference.

New Project

I almost forgot. I am involved in a new project.

Vegan FAQs is a blog created by my friend Dino Sarma. It is essentially a bunch of vegans answering questions that we hear All. The. Time.

Check it out.

Also check out Dino's blog http://altveg.blogspot.com/. And buy his cook book. Because I said so. And it kicks ass.

It's been a while

And I still don't have much to say. In the past weeks I have done the following:

1. Went to the Dave Matthews Band at Alpine Valley with DF. It was really, really fun.

2. Ate a lot of corn.

3. Gone to the Farmers Market a couple of times.

4. Had a migraine.

5. Played with my dogs.

6. Developed a Sudoku addiction.

7. Tried to start my Arbonne business (email me!)

8. Had a cold.

9. Wrecked a cake.

10. Flooded the basement.

So all in all, it has been a very fun few weeks. I will get back to you when I have something interesting to say.
