Thou Shall Not Kill

DH and I actually had a very interesting discussion last night in bed. No, you perverts, it wasn't dirty, it was actually pretty "deep" (har) for midnight.

The discussion started after I had a run in with an anti-choicer (AKA Pro-Lifer). He was really persistent, quoting the bible he was holding onto, and generally getting in our faces. As he was shouting at us I politely said, "Excuse me sir, do eat meat?" over and over again. He wouldn't look at me, nor answer me. Apparently, protesters are the only one's who are allowed to ask questions.

Needless to say, he riled me up. I was discussing it later that evening with DH. We both wholly agree that any one who quotes the bible to argue is off their rocker, but since this guy was so insistent on using it, we thought we would use it to argue back.

The Sixth Commandment simply reads "Thou Shall Not Kill". It doesn't read "Thou Shall Not Kill Unborn Babies". So...the fact that this gentleman would not answer my simple question, really proves that he was a jackass. "Thou Should Not Kill" in essence, should apply to every species, not just humans. Oh, wait. I forgot that humans are sooooo much more important than every other species. Meh.

There is just so much about this scenario that pisses me off. First, he is a man. Second, he was quoting the bible. Third, he was invading our personal space. I also bet had I asked him, he would have been all for the death penalty.

My husband also pointed out that I was a hypocrite because I am a vegan pro-choicer. Which would be true, if I took the bible as the end all be all of what is right and wrong. I don't. The truth is, the bible is a story that is used to provide guidance. The bible also says I have the right to own slaves. It says that you shouldn't come into contact with a woman during "that time of the month" (but pray tel, how will I know?). It states something about the length of a mans hairs. If we interpreted the bible literally, I am pretty sure we would never leave church.
