The end is near...

Or "The day that hell froze over"

This blog entry commemorates two pretty cool events in my life that are approaching quickly.

First things first (and this is the hell freezing over part) I am quitting smoking. My official date is 5/14 or next Wednesday. I am going to have the assistance of Pfizer, who is charging me out of the asshole for it. My doc prescribed Chantix back at the beginning of the year, I have just been too chicken to try. Well, after my Chicago Vegan Freak trip, I am quitting and I really want to. I am hoping it helps my sinuses, skating, and saves us some money as well.

I really debated on if I was going to blog about this or not. This is a pretty big step for me. I have been smoking for approximately half my life. I don't know how non-smokers can think that it is easy to kick a 15 year long habit. That's right folks a 15 year habit. So much in my life is going to have to change. I am going to have to find something different to do while driving. I am probably going to end up giving up diet coke as well, because "Nothing goes with a smoke, quite like a diet coke". I just made that up. Speaking of things that go with smoking, that's half the problem. I heard some one say once that smoking is more addictive than heroin, specifically because you can smoke while doing just about anything. *** Also, when you do heroin, you really don't feel like doing much except heroin. Smoking doesn't do that to most people. You can have a smoke and move on with your day like it's normal. It's pretty fucked up if you ask me. Any hoo, any words of wisdom you can provide would be fantastic.

The second FANTASTIC news is that I get to cut my hair in June. I am not sure I have ever been so excited about something, ever. I have been growing out my hair for a long ass time. I am growing it for Locks of Love and you need ten inches. I am at nine and a quarter. So on 6/20 it's all coming off. Lets look at a progression.

This is from November of 2005:
Me and Cosmo2

Okay, I changed my mind. No progression because I don't like any pictures of me ever. So just know that this is how short my hair was then, and now it is long enough that if I put a ponytail at the nape of my neck, I have ten inches to spare.

***I had to come back and add this. Just because I believe that it is fucked up that smoking is socially acceptable (in some cases) thereby making it harder to quit, does not mean I agree with a ban on smoking in public places at all. I believe that private business have the right to allow smoking in their buildings until it is illegal. If you don't want to be around smoke, don't eat there, go there, work there, bowl there, or spend money there.***

You wonderful dear doing growing all that hair and giving it to such a great cause!! My little niece about 5 years old just did that too!! I know how much it means to these people, my sis was one of them or she thought.... she was all set up to have chemo and when she went in they informed her that chemo would do no good because the cancer had spread to her bones. But before that she had went to try on wigs thinking she would lose her hair and she was pretty glad she wouldn't have to be bald and the wig really did look nice, I just thought she had her hair done nicely!! Also.... you and me have something in common, I too started smoking way young and it wasn't till my second pregnancy that I got the guts to quit. I went to a 5 day no smoking plan, it helped a lot but I did cheat the first couple days... a little. It certainly wasn't my first try at quitting either, heavens NO!! I know for me it was a second by second decision some days to quit, I will not deny it was very hard at first. BUT, I am living proof it can be done, believe in yourself, look past that moment of thinking you can't live without one because my dear.... you will live without one!! If you need any encouragement e-mail me girl cause I'm here for ya and I know all about this one!!;)

I'm a non-smoker and I don't think quitting is easy at all. But that doesn't mean that I don't think you should do it. I do. I'm excited for you and I know you can do this! There are a million benefits to not smoking and I'm sure you've heard them all. Now, what am I allowed to do to you if you cheat and I catch you?

Good luck quitting, drasch! And great idea donating your hair to Locks of Love!

Don't have any particularly scintillating advice on the smoking thing. I listen to podcasts in the car, so maybe you could do that and chew gum? Sometimes I'll just snack while I'm driving. Good luck!

Congratulations on your upcoming changes! I am very proud of you for both! For support, look at whyquit.com; my husband used that site, and he's been smoke free for almost 2 years now

Hey Sis, I think it's great you've decided to quit. I've only been a casual smoker, so I don't have any real first hand advice to offer. But I was 12 when my dad went cold turkey after smoking a pack of Camel non-filters every day for 30 years. IT CAN BE DONE. He said his main motivation was anger. When he realized how addicted he was he got so Godawful angry at tobacco and the hold it had over him. Use anger sister! Great motivator! Stick it to the tobacco companies, I say! I know you can do this GBV. I believe in you.
